Part 1: 6 Lessons from Boston to Providence
In September over 6-weeks, singer/songwriter Johan Danno travelled 2,500 miles and performed 12-shows across the USA. In the process, he discovered 12 lessons that changed his life and will hopefully help to change yours! Introducing – 12 life lessons from a week on the road.
Our story begins in New York, somewhere between my 4th or 5th glass of sake. Looking at my phone I realize, it’s WELL past time to head to my gig. Starting us with Lesson 1: “Leave yourself extra time, because things ALWAYS happen you don’t expect.”
You’ve probably been on a tight schedule and may know this feeling – rushed, worried, anxious at the thought of someone waiting for you to arrive. Or maybe worried about whether someone will be there to pick you up. If you have, you probably are well rehearsed in Lesson 2: “Be polite and wise when apologizing for being late and plan ahead”. Or the most important Lesson 3: “Unfortunately, things RARELY ever go according to plan!”
Well, this story involves these 3 lessons a ton, some random moments, and a glimpse into the insanity that was a week on the road. We had gotten into NYC via train late the night before. Past my delirious state from lack of sleep, tranquility had brewed from the sake and old friends and I was mentally somewhere between preparing for my show and digesting the insanity that was the last 72 hours.
Just 4-days prior, we were in Boston. At the end of a week of shows, Vincent King and his 5-piece band are playing Lucky’s Lounge with me joining as their guest. It’s a busy night and the venue smells of history, sophistication, old friends and new memories. In the front stands Jordan, a filmmaker from LA I had just met 2 days prior chatting to Alyssa San Diego, a friend of Vincent and singer from Providence. Meeting for the first time, as fate would have it, we learn Jordan has a friend in Providence, a rapper by the name of Messy Tye, with a studio and wants to meet us. As Alyssa returns tomorrow and has spare rooms for us, the plan is made for us to head to Providence with her and meet Messy. Introducing. Lesson 4: “Buy the ticket, take the ride, and if you can save on the ticket and ride with an adventure, do it.”
This is when the crazy 72 hours begins. We arrive in Providence and the studio at 2 in the morning, having to cut my studio session in Boston short. We arrive with Jeff, the Lyft driver we’d meet in Boston 2 days prior that happens to be a keyboardist and singer, (he followed us in his car). It’s a hazy pre-winter night in Providence when we all walk in, collectively excited yet unsure what will happen. Meeting Messy Tye for the first time with hugs and laughs, we jam, record, sing, film, rap, and say our good-byes at 5 am. Lesson 5: “Expect the unexpected when you give into the adventure.”
It’s now 11:20 am, in a blink and hours later. I’m suddenly in the café bar Paragon next to Brown University, guiding staff on how to make an espresso Martini, which leads into Lesson 6: “If your night ends when your day begins, espresso martinis help.”
