We’ve been following Amarionette for a few years now and it’s been an interesting ride. This is a band that has (no pun intended) evolved a lot since it’s conception.
The band is back and better than ever with a new EP, Evolution, just released today.
I spoke with Nick Raya about working with Kurt Travis, the new music and Amarionette’s journey overall:
TC: Before we talk about the EP, how did the “Compromise” track with Kurt Travis come about?
NR: “Kurt and Amarionette have been talking about working together since we had been touring throughout bits of 2016-2018. It finally came to fruition when we were in the midst of our vocalist change and we had a lot of fun working on some songs.”
TC: Can you talk a little about the meaning behind the first new single, “No Control”?
NR: “No Control” is about a few different topics, but namely an argument that ensued in a hotel room. It’s interesting because when you listen to this track (particularly the lyrics) I don’t think most people would interpret them that way.”
TC: Was there always a plan to do a “Modern Disco II” ?
NR: “I would say that I wanted to write more songs in the same vein as the original “Modern Disco” since all of us love that song. However, “MDII” was perfect the way it came out. It has a very similar chord structure, key change in the bridge, and a slightly darker twist lyrically. I think our fans will really dig it.”
TC: There’s a feeling of a little more positivity/optimism to these new tracks. Would you attribute that to anything in particular?
NR: “I think the positivity from these new songs is directly attributed to our cohesiveness as a team. We wrote a lot of these lyrics together, and placed a lot of the parts of structure together which we haven’t done in a long time. I also think we are just happier as a band and less stressed than ever before.”
TC: I feel like this EP really finds Amarionette solidifying their sound. How would you describe the music you make?
NR: “We have most certainly found the sound that we are going for and continue to work at it constantly. I think if you listen to all of the collections we have ever released they all have some sort of individuality to them that are unique in their own way. Nonetheless, I would say that Amarionette will always be ever changing stylistically from record to record due to the constant evolution of our influences.”
TC: I see Andres on the new EP. Who is one person you’d like to collab with but haven’t yet?
NR: “Ron, Issy, and myself just had this conversation a few days ago, and I think the winner would be Tyler Carter or Hayley Williams if that was ever an option! We all love those two vocalists and Issy would sound killer with either of them.”
