Experimental hip-hop aritsts emptybrother7 and FBR (Filthy Broke Recordings) have a new project on the way called Thumb & Kid 1.
It started as just a few tracks and an idea for a beat tape. What they ended up with with a much more all-encompassing experience.
Both are multi instrumentalists, producers and engineers so to say that the project sounds clean is an understatement.
The atmosphere they create is a lot like a film or game soundtrack. The album begins with a track that sounds like Radiohead synths being played in a haunted house.
“Soul in LoFi” is probably my favorite track on the album. It’s creepy and beautiful at the same time which is really the best combination I could ask for.
Honestly, that’s a pretty apt description of this entire record. There are so many subtle sounds that, in my opinion, headphones are a must for this album experience.
It sounds as though there was lots of inspiration from bands like Radiohead, The Postal Service and even Nine Inch Nails. If you’re a fan of industrial music but want something less aggressive, this is the record for you.
That being said, there are some harder, colder moments on this project. “Pivot” being one of them.
I can’t state enough how impressive the sound design is throughout this entire record. With so many sounds going on, it’s incredible that none of them outshine each other or wash each other out. Everything has a place and a purpose.
The cover art by Master Buffalo truly sets this release apart aesthetically and had me hooked from the first time I saw it.
If you like experimental hip-hop, lo-fi, and enjoy instrumental music you have to check out Thumb & Kid 1. You can listen to the full album right here once it releases on 2/7/22.
