We met Paul the Kid back in May when he released his carefree party single “Two Hats”.
Just a few months later, when Paul first sent me his new EP I was naively assuming it would be similar to the music he’d put out in the past.
The project begins with a cover of Oliver Tree’s hit “Cash Machine”. He maintains the lo-fi punk vibe of the original while still putting his own spin on it. Paul’s version is definitely brighter and more likely to have you dancing.
“BOY” comes on hard immediately with a drop that reminds me of Sleigh Bells. I kind of like the fact that Paul has totally thrown the notion of genre out the window. This track is equal parts punk rock and noise pop.
The closer of this short ride, “BOMBAY”, solidifies the fact that Paul was justified in going on a journey of doing whatever the fuck he wanted to in the studio. There’s a verse of this song that is reminiscent of Twenty One Pilots, but it’s sandwiched in the middle of a punk song.
Overall, I love the direction that Paul the Kid is headed in. I think more artists need to stop worrying about fitting into a genre or niche and just put out the things they like making.
The fact that this was an enjoyable project to work on shines through in the audio and makes for a short, uplifting listen.
