Who is EJ Carey?

EJ Carey is a singer/songwriter from Boston. She released her debut album, Loaded Question back in 2016.

She just dropped her first new project in five years; an EP titled Outlier.

My first impression from the reverb on the vocals on track 1 reminded me of early Avril Lavigne. There’s definitely nothing wrong with that, either. Lavigne’s first two albums are a few of my favorites.
I feel like Carey managed to channel that same energy of putting your frustrations into songs that don’t necessarily sound sad or angry.

Carey is bringing tons of positive energy, in fact. I think that gives her music a bit of a pop rock layer to it. It sounds like something you could sing along with a big group of smiling people at a show. “Rising Tides, Crashing Skies” and “I Smile” really showcase what I’m talking about.

As the EP progressed, a country influence became clear from the feel of the vocal tone and pacing. The track “Old Friends” is the perfect example of this.

Carey definitely shows off her range more than a few times, and it’s certainly impressive. Outlier is a short release but I think she did a great job of exploring multiple styles of music and proving herself as a dynamic artist.
