Material Pleasures is an indie pop group from the U.S. There’s limited background info on the band and they would like to keep it that way.
Rather than focusing on the individual members, they would like listeners to see the group as a whole and let the music speak for itself.
They describe their sound as indie pop that’s primarily inspired by disco and alternative pop. That’s definitely accurate of their earlier work while they’re delving into hip-hop on their two latest singles.
“save the bees” and “dime” were released over the last few weeks and are gaining streams steadily. The shift in style, while surprising, still maintains the common thread of experimental instrumentals.
“save the bees” sounds like if you fused lo-fi with modern trap. The pre-chorus reminds me slightly of indie hip-hop legend Yoni Wolf (Why?).
“dime” has more of a dance-y feel to it. With the vocal effects, it does stray a bit into hyper-pop territory. The melody on this one is infectious.
material pleasures is evolving and changing without any regard for the industry and proving that artists no longer need to stick to one genre.
I think that’s a positive step in the right direction. Look at the Top 40, it’s been extremely stale for years. Popular artists are regurgitating the same song twenty different ways. Meanwhile, the artists who are choosing to switch things up and actually treat their music like art are beginning to win. I hope to see this shift continue in the near future.
