We met High Morale last month when they released their jaw dropping illustrated video for the single “Face to Face”.
The band have just released their debut EP of the same name.
This release is relatively short with only 4 tracks. I knew from the first 30 seconds of track 1 that this was going to be an interesting listen.
Their overall electro pop style has an industrial feel to it that kept reminding me of a warmer and more inviting version of Portishead.
“Kind of Lonely” – the vocal performance and synths feel a bit like Deep House at times. The song has a catchy, emotionally charged chorus.
I love the breakdown with the ghostly vocals popping in.
“Follow Me Down” finds the band exploring the intersection of Daft Punk and Chromeo. The track is ultra smooth and a bit more R&B influenced. There are hints of synthwave and outrun influence in the instrumental as well.
“Face to Face” is the perfect title track. Even without seeing that top tier video to accompany it.
Fans of Tame Impala will feel right at home. This is the song that would make you transcend at a live show. If you’re not shuffling your feet, you’re not actually listening.
“Oil & Water” is the brightest track on the EP. The instrumental brings me back to the 80’s at the peak of New Wave. To me, this is where High Morale begins to explore straight up pop music. It makes me excited to hear what’s to come in the future.
High Morale has definitely proven they are here to stay. They bring an impressive blend of indie rock and electro pop that will undoubtedly bring new fans to both genres.
I will be surprised if I don’t see these guys on the festival circuit within the next few years.
