Robert Vandal is a producer from Columbia, South Carolina. He grew up around music his whole life, as his parents were both musicians.
He started making instrumentals in 2013 by using the DAW Reason. He shifted over to Ableton with the help and guidance of his brother.
Vandal is influenced heavily by Flume and Quiet Bison, which is evident in his nature oriented brand of future bass.
“NECTAR” begins this experience by inviting you in. The track is warm and comforting.
It’s obvious that he took his time with the mix and master. Every sound is exactly as loud as it should be.
Upon subsequent listens, I think this track may be my favorite.
“SINK” sounds like Vandal exploring the Fantasy realm. There’s something eerie about the overall feel of the song. The synth/vocal samples that sound like a choir are a nice touch.
This song is epic in every way and is an interesting turn to take on this debut.
“COLDFEET” is the polar opposite of the 1st track; cold and dark. This is the track that introduces you to the machines. It definitely goes hard and proves Vandal’s versatility.
The first thing I noticed about the closer, “BOUND” were some hyperpop undertones that surprised me.
It struck me that this is a bit brighter than some of the more industrial future bass I’ve heard lately.
This song is full of beautiful moments that take you all over the place. From underwater to up in space.
VOYAGE is a strong debut by an artist who obviously has a lot to say through his music. Vandal does a great job of channeling emotions into his work even without using lyrics.
