We got to know 2LATE back in November of 2020 when he dropped his documentary EP, Lost Summer.
He just released his new single “Ecstasy” which is the first look we’re getting at his upcoming debut EP, Up Till 2.
The song is meant to put a positive spin on all of the pent up aggression and frustration we all had after quarantine. This is a dance anthem that will help you let loose and take solace in the fact that you made it through a pandemic.
To celebrate the release of “Ecstasy”, 2LATE gave us some of his most helpful songwriting tips:
#1. Listen & Think
“What does the instrumental make you feel? What buzzwords come to mind? What do you want to convey? Be patient with this step. Try recording a freestyle over the instrumental to see what words, melodies, and flows come to mind. Your first engagement with the instrumental is typically the most natural.”
#2. Distinguish
“Deliberately distinguish the chorus from the verses and the verses from each other. For the chorus, try singing higher or more emphatically, write more concisely and find a repeating melody or rhythm that is memorable. To highlight certain sections or phrases while recording, add doubled vocals or harmonies, and try panning the vocals to either side instead of the middle.”
#3. Arrangement
“Create highs and lows and make sure each section builds off of the last in some way. Make every section memorable and desirable in its own right so it doesn’t sound like the verses are simply a layover until the chorus. Make the end memorable — try adding more harmonies, layers, or production.”
#4. Be Vulnerable
“Try to tell a story or paint a picture. It does NOT have to be your own. Feel free to fantasize and dream of worlds outside your own…this still reflects your authentic self.”
#5. Re-Read and Revise
“Make sure the flows are balanced and challenge yourself to make sure every word and phrase matters.”
