We got to know Young God Blow last month when he dropped his relentless banger “11TH STREET” featuring labelmate DAM3.
Continuing to ride the wave of his own momentum, YGB just released another single titled “Energy”.
“Ya’ll can’t match my energy” is an accurate statement repeated by YGB throughout the track. Every time he raps he does so with urgency.
This track is an exploration of the cross section between hip-hop and hyperpop. To help him navigate this journey, YGB enlisted the help of producers R.L. Beats and Midden.
“Lately I feel like I’ve been falling in love with the Hyperpop scene as a whole & when R.L Beats sent me a beat pack of straight rage beats I
knew what I had to do. Whenever I make music I love to add my own
energy and style into what I choose to create so both the title of the song & the atmosphere it brings was a no brainer. I honestly believe no one can match my energy.” -YGB
We wanted to get to know YGB’s influences a bit more deeply. He took the time to countdown his personal favorite albums:
Tyler, the Creator – Cherry Bomb
“My favorite album by my favorite artist also happens to be everyone’s least favorite. It’s kinda crazy how that works right? I loved Cherry Bomb from the day it was first teased with “FUCKING YOUNG” & “DEATHCAMP” because seeing those polar opposites work so dynamically was absolutely beautiful to me. It released around my junior year of high school and really changed the way I listen to music. The way Tyler switched from his previous style to this and orchestrating every song so uniquely made me fall in love with his creative genius that much more. I actually like that it’s underrated because it makes me appreciate it more. Knowing I see what a lot of others don’t, it kinda feels personal in a way. I know a lot of people may see me like that too, but I promise I’ll go down as one of the greats.”
Earl Sweatshirt – Doris
“This album has been in my rotation every since it dropped, and when Spotify does their yearly wrap up it’s always the number one album I listen to. Old Earl Sweatshirt was a lyrical god, he was so untouched and the rhyme schemes and bars he came up with was out of this world. I’ve memorized every single line word and adlib to the T, I can say this piece of work sparked my lyrical side because I envy how artists can do this seemingly with ease.”
tobi lou – Live on Ice
“I’ve been a fan of tobi lou since before he blew up off his “Buff Baby” song. I remember him dropping it and only having like 11,000 followers on Instagram and just skyrocketing to where he’s at right now. I’ve always been fascinated by how amazing an artist can be and no one knowing about them. He truly inspired me through my music journey because I felt like I discovered him when he was just like me and now he’s making waves in the music sphere. When he dropped Live On Ice I was not surprised, but I was still in awe, at how someone can make such a perfect no skip album and not be mainstream. One of my music idols for sure.”
Frank Ocean – Blonde
“It goes without saying that Frank Ocean is one of the top 5 best artists of our generation and I’ll stand by that. His music elevates you to the highest level. I remember listening to Channel Orange on repeat for years and when Blonde was announced I was so excited and it did not let me down. Every song is heavenly and I love how it feels like you’re being transported to a different plane of existence.”
Tyler, The Creator – WOLF
“This is the album that helped me find myself. Before getting into Tyler’s music I thought what media portrayed him to be was actually him and it turned me off. But at the time I was having sort of an identity issue where I didn’t know who I was or how I stood out because I lived each day the same boring way. Crazy enough MUSIC is what changed that for me and it was this album in particular. First song I heard was “Tamale” and I loved how unorthodox and crazy it was but then it switched to “Answer” and that took me out. I resonated with what he was saying spiritually and from there I knew this was the guy I wanted to keep listening to.”
Tyler, The Creator – IGOR/Flowerboy
“It’s a toss up between these two for the same exact reason. As Tyler grows as an artist and person I feel like I grow as well. He was my first and still is my favorite artist. I grew up on each of his albums and seeing his growth coincide with mine was so amazing. Both these albums shows how far he came as an artist and both are masterpieces in my eyes. They made the summer and I have them in my heavy rotation ’til this day. It’s crazy how something that came out so recently can provide such nostalgic value.”
Childish Gambino – Because the Internet
“Oh man, when I was going through my first heartbreak this album really shined brightest. I was only a teenager but we all had that phase of being a hopeless romantic and when I was in that phase this beautiful project dropped. It doesn’t hit as hard as it used to because I’m past that situation I was in but it definitely has potential to put me back in my bag about my past.”
Chance The Rapper – Acid Rap
“Peak Chance The Rapper. This album was just so silkily smooth and beautiful in every way. Every now and then I go revisit it and it gives off such nostalgia about old friends and times I use to spend with them. It gave me inspiration on how I wanted my music to make people feel.”
Earl Sweatshirt – I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside
“When this dropped I was a junior in high school and I was fully committed to the edgy skater boy life style. From the looks to actually picking up skateboarding. Going from home to school and back I had this album on REPEAT every time. Those long rides were dope as hell for real.”
Kota the Friend – EVERYTHING
“This album really made summer 2020 special to me. Although it was the peak of the COVID pandemic I still (safely) went out with friends and spent quality time. It definitely helped me get through the rest of the year and now I associate it with so many fond memories.”
