Erin Fox is a Philadelphia based singer/songwriter. She has been a staple in the Philly indie scene for almost twenty years now.
She had already established herself with a few bands before venturing off into a solo career in 2015.
She just released her new full length album, Fuzzy Logic.
There is so doubt that Fox has been influenced and inspired by folk music. This LP fuses multiple genres in it’s use of things like blues inspired bass lines. My first impression was that these songs reminded me of a local coffee shop performance that makes you stop and pay attention.
The whole album feels like it’s from the past. Fox is doing her best to bring music back to it’s roots. There are no production tricks here. Each song relies on the vocal and instrumental performances which exceed expectations throughout.
The fact that the vocals aren’t over processed is such a welcome change from what I’m used to in 2021. There’s something deeply personal about the way these songs are sung. With no effects or pitch correction, we get a very raw and real performance that will cut deep at moments.
The haunting, dissonant nature of “Spare Me” made me gravitate towards it as my favorite off the album at first. Upon subsequent listens, I think “Very Far” stood out the most to me.
There’s a fair amount of diversity among the LP. There are moments that feel very 90’s Fiona Apple and others that feel like Fox is directly channeling Jefferson Airplane. The sixth track, “Pictures” did have a very subtle resemblance to Amy Winehouse as well.
Fuzzy Logic is a sort of audio diary that encapsulates moments of frustration, skepticism and joy. All the catharsis culminates in the title track, which serves as the closer.
