Paul the Kid is a multi-faceted artist from Aukland, New Zealand.
He spent many years as the lead singer of the band he founded, Night Gaunts, who went on to perform hundreds of shows worldwide, including two headlining runs in the U.S.
As a solo artist, he has independently released two EP’s and shows no signs of slowing down.
He cites a few of his influences as Sticky Fingers and Mac Miller.
His new single “Two Hats” may come across like a euphemism for taking on too many jobs or responsibilities. To be honest, it’s really not that deep. Paul wants the world to know that this song is literally about wearing two hats. Personal style and outright drip is not something that Paul the Kid is lacking.
This new single expertly fuses house music and hip-hop in a way I don’t often hear. Personally, I think Paul is at the forefront of the exact union of influences that will be the next big wave in music.
The visual component for the track stands to prove that you don’t need a huge budget and expensive equipment to make a fun music video. Paul and his band embrace the dance element of the song and fully vibe for 4 plus minutes. There are some super creative shots like one from the perspective of the kick drum pedal.
After listening to this track multiple times, one thing is abundantly clear. Paul the Kid is having a lot of fun making music and that translates through the speakers as you’re listening. The carefree and lighthearted nature of “Two Hats” is exactly what we all need at a time when things are increasingly tense in the world.
