Damper is a 3-piece emo band from San Francisco. They recently signed to Old Press Records. With members spanning from Chicago to San Francisco, they sonically and geographically bridge the gap between Bay Area and Midwest emo.
Slow Disco is an emo/math rock band from Portland. The project began as a solo singer/songwriter endeavor and evolved into a full band shortly after conception.
Damper’s portion of this split begins with “What Are These Dreams That I’ve Been Having Lately?”.
For a song that’s clearly written from a place of pain, it sure is bouncy. This is one of those songs you hear at a show and start moving immediately. If you know the words, scream them.
I love the spoken word sample near the end. It reminds me of one of my favorites, Desaparecidos.
“Showed Up Too Late for the Emo Revival”
“Who am I still doing this for?” is a question we should all stop and ask ourselves. Living our lives for others will never bring about true peace.
Moody and dark, reminds me of The Get Up Kids.
SLOW DISCO‘s portion of the split seems to have more of a jam band or free form feel to it.
“Wokefest” is my favorite of the two SD songs on this release. I love the fact that it has moments of minimal lyrics because it allows you to get lost in the instrumental breakdowns. They seem to have found a happy medium between Thursday and Saves the Day.
“An Ode to Bucciarati” feels like going back in time to middle school when I first discovered emo music. There’s a nostalgia factor that brings to mind memories of friends with arms around each other’s shoulders at local shows.
The track clocks in at over 5 minutes and there’s an amazing bridge that I totally got lost in when listening. When the gang vocals come in and the breakdown starts, you hear some heavy post-hardcore influence. Touché Amoré would be proud.
