If you haven’t already heard, Anthony Green (Circa Survive), Adam Lazarra & John Nolan (Taking Back Sunday) and Benjamin Homola (Grouplove) have formed a side project that you need to listen to.
The project, now known as Fuckin Whatever, was created from parking lot jam sessions after stops on the 2016 Taste of Chaos Tour.
In an upcoming interview, the band will talk more about the early years of the project and how it quietly lived on for years until the perfect moment arose.
For now, Fuckin Whatever has just released their first single titled “Original Sin”. This is only a small taste of what we can expect on the self titled EP when it drops in June.
There’s an eeriness that does remind me a little of Green’s other project, The Sound of Animals Fighting. The use of vocals as background instruments gives this single a bit of a world music feel.
While it is inherently experimental music, the group manage to flesh out catchy harmonies that make it more palatable. Homola’s percussion is hauntingly beautiful and adds to what seems to be a very relaxed atmosphere.
When listening, you can tell that this project is a way for it’s members to let loose. There are no stringent expectations or harsh critiques. Everyone creates what they think sounds good, and the rest of the band plays off of that. This is the direction I hope to see more music going in the future and I’m excited to see what else Fuckin Whatever has in store.
