Lizzie Andrew is a Kent based singer/songwriter who just released her very first solo single, “Escape”, a few weeks ago.
This is the first time Andrew has released any solo material, but she’s no stranger to the music scene. She spent many years as the front-woman for the rock band Men Amongst Kings.
Using “Escape” as the catalyst to a solo career, she collaborated with writer/producer Richard Marc to help fulfill her vision.
The song starts out with stadium-filling percussion that reminds me a little of Enya.
The pitched up/pitched down vocals harmonizing is a great touch. I’m not sure if it’s a vocoder or just effects, but it’s fantastic. It adds a bit of personality rather than just layering regular vocal takes multiple times.
The breakdown has some subtle grunge/industrial influence peeking out in an otherwise fairly pop oriented song.
“Escape” clocks in at just under 3 and a half minutes but the use of those altered vocals I mentioned earlier keeps things extremely interesting and makes the song seem a bit shorter.
When asked about the inspiration behind her debut single, Andrew said:
“I went through a very difficult time when lockdown first hit and found songwriting to be a really good way to deal with what I was feeling. I was in a difficult relationship which ended as a result of the lockdown. It also massively inspired me to write this track as it was a starting point for me to accept how I was feeling and work through it. This song is all about acceptance. Acceptance of yourself, accepting that you make mistakes and are able to move past that to be in a healthier frame of mind. I think that is something a lot of people need and can relate to right now”. – Lizzie Andrew
