A Day Without Love (Brian Walker) is constantly aiming to build up the independent music scene. Hosting online open mics during quarantine and hyping up artists and creatives on TikTok are just a few examples of this.
Recently, he and producer Brianna Spause took on a film project.
Safe x Sound focuses on the importance of safe spaces within the music and art communities.
The idea of safe spaces and their necessity within the creative community is one that is only becoming more relevant over time. If people don’t feel safe within the music or art scenes, that defeats the purpose of the outlet. Music and art is how people express themselves and they only want to be able to do so without the fear of being judged or much worse.
Walker took the time to answer a few questions about safe spaces, the film and how it came to be:
Nick Teal: When was your initial inspiration to make this film?
Brian Walker: “Brianna Spause and I originally brainstormed this idea over dinner in 2018 when wanting to make a documentary about culture and music. As we traveled the story told itself.”
NT: Can you tell me a bit about the Storytellers Tour in 2019?
BW: “Certainly. The idea of the Storyteller’s Tour was for all the artists to share their stories on the road via sing alongs and actual storytelling. The tour was intended to learn about the different stories of people we met along the way and how music has changed their lives.”
NT: How would you define a “safe space” within the music scene?
BW: “A Safe Space is an inclusive and intersectional space that uplifts a standard of safety that allows marginalized people feel welcome and has a no tolerance policy towards toxic behavior.”
NT: Why do you think safe spaces within music are so important?
BW: “They are important because they help uplift those who don’t typically have a voice at the table and provide a standard of ethics, morals and sound behavior for listeners, musicians and other advocates for equality.”
NT: How do you think we can get the idea of safe spaces to become a more mainstream concept?
BW: “We would need buy in from unions, create a code of ethics across underground and mainstream spaces to uphold safe space practices, create an employee relations team, and set a code of ethics and rules for the music community. While celebrities do need to speak up, I think logistically we need stakeholder buy in on all fronts for this to occur.”
NT: Were you nervous at all about the undertaking of making a documentary?
BW: “No not really, I wanted to do it and work with a team, there’s so many more documentaries I want to create as I move forward in my journey.”
NT: Do you have any advice for those who may feel judged/cast out within the music scene or life in general?
BW: “Find your tribe no matter what. There’s a lot of people seeking a home, and you have to find one for you and the ones like you everyday.”
