We got to know Chèlle back in January when she dropped her high energy dance anthem “Hallucinating You”. Honestly, I still can’t get that song out of my head and I know I’m not the only one.
She’s back with another solid track, “If You Were Here”, which features fellow Toronto artist Mully.
The song is based around an all too familiar scenario of being separated from a loved one during the pandemic and quarantine.
The track is a huge departure from the carefree, bubbly nature of “Hallucinating You”.
Chèlle isn’t wasting any time showing her range with this pop ballad. The stripped down nature of the instrumental allows the listener to really focus on the emotion in the vocal performances.
The song starts a bit somber but it does open up as it goes on. I had never heard of Mully before this but his falsetto made sure I wouldn’t soon forget him.
The pairing of these two vocalists is a feat of genius and whoever is responsible for them collaborating deserves some credit.
Chèlle manages to make the song gigantic, anthemic even, without the melodrama that one often finds in pop music.
The delivery of the lyrics is extremely genuine and reminds you that you aren’t just listening to an artist, you’re listening to a person. With real problems and real emotions.
Chèlle’s vocals are so strong and she’s clearly open to trying new types of songs. I’m excited to see where that openness will lead her in the near future.
