The Burying Kind is a brand new project consisting of Dan Milligan (The Joy Thieves) and Scott-David Allen (A Covenant of Thorns).
The Chicago-adjacent duo combines sub-genres like dream-pop and darkwave with more traditional elements of alternative rock.
TBK just released their debut self-titled EP. From the very first notes, it’s easy to hear similarities to My Bloody Valentine and Interpol.
This whole EP is deeply rooted in 80’s New Wave. It is inherently dark in tone, but each song is beautifully layered to make for a dynamic listen.
This exploration of darkwave will take you deep into caverns with it’s shimmery synths and pulsing bass.
Amongst the more shadowy moments on the EP, there are more upbeat, echo-y stadium pop songs like “Horizon”. The duo’s ability to be versatile does help to lighten the mood a bit on this release.
Each of the 5 tracks feels at home on this project. With nothing out of place, TBK can focus on getting the most out of the sonic highways they’ve constructed.
If you’re a fan of bands like Cocteau Twins, Tears for Fears or Afghan Whigs, you have to check out The Burying Kind.
