Riot Course is an alternative hard rock trio who just released their debut EP, Maybe I’ll See You Next Year.
The project began last year when Covid-19 shut everything down. What better to do in that situation than record music?
Founding member Kate Emrich decided to use this new found free time to take some songs she had written into the studio and see where they went.
After recording some original songs, Emrich enlisted the help of two friends, Spencer Andrew (bass) and Sawyer Dupree (drums) to form a proper band that shared her vision and passion.
There are moments of melodic post hardcore/punk influence throughout the EP. Although, I wouldn’t categorize the whole release as either of those. I’d hesitate to categorize this EP as any one thing.
It would be tough not to make a comparison to In This Moment and Distillers with piercing vocals like Kate’s.
This is certainly more progressive and intricate than something like ITM, but the general darkness and moodiness is there.
When I really sat and listened, what I heard was the result if Between the Buried and Me and RIOT-era Paramore were to have a baby.
The band’s punk roots really shine through on the track “Pearls”.
Even math rock/prog rock fans will find things to love here with interesting instrumentation choices in every track.
