Ula Blue is a singer/songwriter from Vermont. She grew up in the middle of nowhere and fell in love with painting, writing and photography.
She spent time studying overseas at the University of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Vermont in 2018 and is currently pursuing a masters degree in music business at Frost School of Music at The University of Miami.
In 2019 she made the decision to relocate to New York City. She quickly began to get involved with production, learning from Chazzy Lake of Laundry Room Studios.
She also did some A&R for a college-based streaming/social media start up, Quadio.
In the face of a global pandemic, Ula decided to return home to Vermont in early 2020 to try to relax and begin writing and recording her EP.
With the help of producer/artist Carter Vail of Happy Camper Studios in Nashville, she was able to create her first single, “Carry On”.
The influence of 70’s rock is apparent on this single. Mostly in the percussion and overall feel of the song. The intro to the song is reminiscent of “Wish You Were Here”.
Ula’s vocals are beautiful and soulful, backed by warm synths and percussion that all seems extremely balanced.
This is yet another one of those times where I have a hard time believing this is an artist’s first endeavor into recording music. Despite this being her first single, this sounds like the work of a seasoned veteran.
I really enjoy how the bridge works to make this almost seem like two different similar songs. Normally, my attention span gets the best of me with longer tracks, but “Carry On” is dynamic and interesting the whole way through. This makes me excited to hear Ula Blue’s EP later this year.
