We got to know Brian Walker, A.K.A. A Day Without Love, back in 2018. A lot has changed since then. The country is undoubtedly in a darker place than it was two years ago. Rather than let that consume him, Walker seems to have a system of channeling his frustration into music that attempts to bring people together.
Walker is one of the most critical people I’ve encountered. Or perhaps it’s just that he speaks the things we all tend to let fester inside. He calls out a lot of B.S. both in the music industry and the world as a whole. Saying that he isn’t afraid to speak his mind seems disingenuous. He walks the tightrope of being an activist through his music, using his creations to spread awareness and hopefully spark meaningful conversation.
He just released a music video from his project WTF Part 1, “First Class For Every Class” feat. OkBloomer. The WTF series was made to highlight the social climate of 2020.
The project is, as always, self produced and recorded.
The music video was edited by Alex Stanilla and recorded with social distancing in mind using cell phones. Throughout the video we have people laying down in the leaves. Walker explains the symbolism behind that: “It’s representative of the fact that whether we are living or dying, black people’s lives can still be ended by the corrupt American system.”
That’s a heavy thought to take in for most. But that’s the whole point of A Day Without Love’s music. It’s supposed to make you slightly uncomfortable. Far too often, I know how easy it is to forget your privilege as a Caucasian in America. Records like this help me open my mind a bit more and remember that there are systemic changes that need to be made. The longer we keep pretending like everything is fine, the worse it will get.
“First class for every class touches on the classism and racism of America and how no president or corporate leader has worked hard enough to make changes. We have taken too long to change our healthcare policies, the welfare of American people. The time for change is now not in one week, not in six weeks, not next quarter, but now.” – Brian, A Day Without Love.
