Checking in With Masceo: 3 Years Later

When we met Masceo three years ago he was a 17 year old producer who had just started getting in to rap.
Now, in 2020 he’s developed into much more than that. He’s now a senior in college and has had his fair share of real life struggles.
His personal journey is evident in the sonic shift of Masceo’s newest releases. In his own words,
“Every song I make I want to reflect the experiences I’ve had.”

TC: What’s been the most significant change to your life in the last three years?

M: “If I had to pick one thing that’s brought the most change, I’d have to say my girl. I’ve experienced a lot of life and a lot of hardships with her. She really has helped me see the world in a different light.
I feel like I always had this chip on my shoulder and was always trying to prove myself to the world.
Now, I just enjoy the small things in life. My whole vibe has changed, and I’m sure you can hear it in the music.
I’m more sure of myself. I’ve always believed in my music, but it took me a while to believe in myself. That’s what makes all the difference in the world. Once I started believing in myself, I felt like every goal was in reach. Now, I understand I have all the potential and talent in the world, at this point it’s just about consistency. Everyone will catch on soon enough.”

NT: What personal or professional goals have you met over the last three years?

M: “I’ve become financially independent while in college. It may not seem like much but for anybody who’s been in college full time and had to pay their own bills, they understand how hard it is to stay afloat. I have my own place, my own car, and I’ve started my own car detailing business to bring in a second income. I’ve also teamed up with an old classmate from high school and we have started a mini label for independent artists.
The goal is to be able to let artists have as much freedom as possible while also having the perks of being connected to a record label.
We distribute our artists’ music, promote it, put them in contact with producers, engineers, etc.
We’re not too worried about money right now. We really just want to be able to help young artists get their music out there and support them in any way possible.”

Masceo’s new singles, “U and I” and “If I Told You” are love songs with a little bit of trap influence. One of the most noticeable changes from his old material is the singing. He has clearly been working on melodies and diversifying his skill set.
When I first listened to “U and I” I legitimately thought this was a different person. The vocals fluctuate between smooth R&B and the more standard modern hip-hop delivery.
These two new songs really find him flexing that new found confidence, but not my bragging. Instead he shows his growth by making more dynamic and catchy tracks than ever before.
