Laurel Westphal is a 19 year old independent artist from Aurora, Illinois.
Currently residing in San Antonio, Texas, Laurel finds time to create music while still being a full time college student.
Growing up, she wrote songs on ukulele and piano that she would keep to herself.
Her first taste of creating music with others was during her senior year of high school, when she was in a band with a few close friends. That helped her realize her passion for making and writing songs as a way to express herself. She quickly became well-acquainted with writing songs using royalty-free YouTube beats.
The first bit of attention she got from her music was on TikTok after posting a late-night ad for a mixtape.
The TikTok platform is becoming one of the best ways to find new artists, and it’s how I originally found Laurel’s music to begin with.
Her releases have been described as “bedroom cloud rap,” but as of now, she’s still figuring out her sound.
Any fan of lo-fi should be listening to Laurel. There is something super relaxing about the beats/melodies she picks. The vocal style is a mixture between soft singing and rapping.
There are elements of folk, emo, hip-hop, and bedroom pop. This is another one of those rare moments where I get to watch an artist from nearly the beginning of their career. I think we could see Laurel with a “Bad Guy” level hit within the next few years.
