BLACKSHAPE is an instrumental post-mathcore band from Salt Lake City. They are set to release their debut LP in early 2021.
The forthcoming album was recorded and co-produced by Matt Goldman (Underoath, Silent Planet). It was recorded in a continuous loop to provide a unique experience and journey for the listener.
The first single “III” was the starting point for the whole record. The song starts urgently with some quick riffs that propel you into the dimension the band is currently inhabiting.
The music is definitely heavy but it’s not abrasive. It reminds me a bit of Between the Buried and Me and The Contortionist. Heavy music with an identifiable melody that makes you move.
The way that they tell a story with no words at all is really something remarkable. That’s a skill that not every band has and I think it often goes unnoticed.
If the whole record is as cleanly produced as “III” then we’re in for a treat when this thing drops in 2021.
“Our approach was to not give context to the listener so that they can experience the album in their own way without any narrative influence from us. That’s why we assigned the songs numbers rather than names and made it mostly instrumental.” -Scott Shepard
The band plans to steadily release singles up until the release of their full length so be on the look out for lots more from them before the year is up.
