Taylor Roche is an independent pop artist from Aukland New Zealand.
He attended university for a year before leaving to pursue his career writing and performing music.
Now 22 years old, Roche spent time based in New Orleans, Miami, and Mexico performing as lead vocalist for a 9-piece Pop party band for the largest cruise line corporation in the world.
While traveling, he began to write solo material in between performances.
Now back home in New Zealand, he’s ready to release numerous projects, the first of which being “Never Like That”.
“Never Like That” came about during a late night demo making session last year. It was 1 a.m. and Roche had just finished a set with his band on a ship in Mexico – just prior to his set, he had fallen out of a relationship with a girl on the other side of the world. Sitting in the cabin with a keyboard, rode mic, notebook and computer, he started writing down his feelings – the first demo of “Never Like That” was made.
Soft falsetto vocals, thumping bass, and a clean synth ride through this entire track. You can tell that Taylor has taken notes throughout his years being interested in music.
This is pop music in it’s purest form. This is equally catchy and well-produced as huge acts like The Weeknd or Shawn Mendes.
There is one thing that is drastically different though. Roche clearly writes his own songs and the emotion shows through in the final product.
“Never Like That” is about the idea of a person changing their personality and surrounding themselves with people they normally wouldn’t in order to deal with heartbreak.
Exploring the ways in which we all deal with loss without being overly sad or corny is hard to do. Taylor seems to find the balance well and gives us an honest and open song that we can blast all the way down the highway.
“Never Like That” was recorded and co-produced by Sam Jones at BigPop Studios.
Mixed by engineer Jacob Rush.
