Royal Hearts is a 4- piece post hardcore band from Fort Lauderdale.
This is the first major project for all of it’s members and they are proving themselves out of the gate.
With only a few singles out so far, the band just released it’s debut EP, Within Reach this weekend.
The first track “Fairweather” begins with a guitar riff that reminded me of Glassjaw.
As the vocals come in and the song drives toward the chorus I began to think this is really similar to how I felt when I first heard We Came As Romans first record.
Both vocalists complement each other well instead of getting in each other’s way.
The second track “It Gets Me So” has an ambient intro that has a Devil and God era- Brand New feel to it. That quickly leads into a slower and more intimate cut.
There’s clearly an element of catharsis here and nothing is held back.
The instrumentation is very deliberate and forces you to headbang whether you want to or not.
The outro to this song is incredible and truly makes my throat hurt.
Now, if the opener reminded me of Glassjaw, “Loving to Leaving” gives me huge Everytime I Die vibes.
Royal Hearts do a really good job of making aggressive music while still maintaining coherent emotion and themes.
“Death of Me” introduces some brutal double bass pedal moments and a really great breakdown.
There’s something really symbiotic about this band. Every member needs the others and they all make each other shine in the final product.
“Wasting My Time” is possibly the most straight forward punk song on the EP. I would really love to see this band live once shows are an option because I’m sure their stage presence is massive.
Although “Within Reach” is only 5 tracks, Royal Hearts display a real gift for storytelling and composition on their debut EP.
I noticed little things within the instrumentals that were risks which paid off. This band seems to be willing to try new things and experiment a bit within the realm of post hardcore music.
