A few weeks ago Richmond rockers No Moniker released the lead single off their Private Prophet EP, “Tidal Wave”.
The video is inspired by the trailer for the movie The Lighthouse.
In an interview with Under the Radar Magazine frontman Jordan Scott says about the video,
“The long shot at the beginning gave us the idea to stick a looming horror figure in the background, and we immediately thought of It Follows. And the reality-hopping occurred because we found a $2 VR headset on tour last summer, and it became an essential part of our life on the road. Also I was reading The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch at the time, which is a book about shifting realities. Above all though we just wanted to make a fun video and have a good time doing it, which we did.”
When I first heard “Tidal Wave” I immediately drew comparisons to Queens of the Stone Age and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. There’s a sort of delicate balance between dark and light in the music that’s hard to put into words.
The vocal register is certainly 70’s and New Wave reminiscent.
The video is fun, super creative and doesn’t take itself too seriously, which I prefer to an over-produced visual. The concept is there and the execution is great. To me, the video almost reads horror movie meets sitcom and I love it.
