BEEA continues to spread her captivating melodies and emotive, heartfelt lyricism across Europe and beyond.
Taking influence from her alternative rock contemporaries, notably many of the women who have helped carved the path in the genre, her new single ‘Paranoia’ nods to the likes of Tonight Alive, Echosmith, and PVRIS.
Slightly haunting, completely powerful vocals shine through this new track.
The best way to describe it is catchy without being corny. There’s an undeniable power in BEEA’s voice that will undoubtedly move listeners.
She took some time to talk with us about her old band, live shows, and of course, paranoia.
TC: Can you tell me a little about the band you played with before starting to make solo material?
BEEA: “I was in a pop punk band called From Kids To Heroes which started in 2012. We released an album, played a few shows in Portugal and decided to end in 2015.”
TC: How do you think growing up in Lisbon affected your perception of the music industry?
BEEA: “Unfortunately, growing up in a small city like Lisbon (at least compared to cities like London or Paris) meant that there weren’t many opportunities for me to play live or even get the chance to see some of my favorite bands. When it comes to the “alternative scene” we’re very limited over here, even though I’ve noticed a slight improvement over the years. There’s no way bands like Our Last Night, Northlane or State Champs would’ve played here 10 years ago, which is a really good sign! Since I go to (almost) every single pop punk/metalcore gig there is in Lisbon, I’ve also been noticing that younger generations are starting to come and the crowd has been getting bigger each time, which is pretty cool!“
TC: It’s obvious you draw influence from artists like PVRIS. Is there anyone less obvious that you are influenced by?
BEEA: “I’d say Sleeping With Sirens, Bring Me The Horizon (the new album has been such a huge inspiration in my music) and The Weeknd. Somehow that’s how I got into writing “Better Off”.
TC: How was the experience supporting Against the Current?
BEEA: “That was truly one of the best experiences of my life! I even got the chance to talk to Chrissy (one of my favorite singers!), and she was super kind to me. She even said that she watched a little bit of my set and liked it! My heart just dropped!” (she laughs)
TC: What artists do you feel are under rated right now?
BEEA: “Bands like Hot Milk and Yours Truly, even though they’ve been getting more popular each day, and I’m pretty sure they have a great career ahead of them! I also think my friends Two Trains Left deserve more love and attention, I really enjoy their music.”
TC: Why is the EP titled Paranoia? What, if anything, are you paranoid about?
BEEA: “I like to think that I’m no longer paranoid about anything” (she laughs). “I wrote “Paranoia” because I was in a toxic relationship and I was feeling scared and paranoid all the time. I was so afraid to lose my boyfriend that he was all I could think about and everything revolved around him. I wrote “Paranoia” in order to let go of that period of my life and to help me remember that I should never put anyone else above everything in my life.”
