I Met A Yeti are making truly catchy alternative rock that you need to hear.
This is group who has evolved a lot in a very short amount of time. You can hear the growth in confidence and ability even from just a few years back. Daisy’s vocals soar around purposeful and driving guitar riffs. The band bring melodies that can’t help but get stuck in your head.
The music is equal parts beauty and chaos. Just enough of both to remain interesting without being overwhelming.
Personally I draw comparisons to Icarus the Owl, I The Mighty, and Hail The Sun.
I spoke with Daisy about the band, their new music, and more:
NT: First things first, I think we need a better introduction to the Yeti. Who is he and who drew the cover art?
IMAY: “We aren’t really at liberty to discuss all too much about him, but let’s just say our band is named I Met A Yeti for a reason. He has gone from being a lonely sad drunk to being the role-model camp counselor you see today, and we are very proud of him for that. Because no known photographs of the Yeti exist, we had to have his image illustrated by the very talented Cory Curly Swope.”
NT: Love this new song title (“Blue Eyes White Yeti”). How into Yu-Gi-Oh! were you growing up?
IMAY: “Growing up? The only reason we’ve gotten this far is because we’ve trusted in the heart of the cards to this day. If anyone coming out to our shows is interested in playing a game with me, I’ll have my Blue-Eyes deck ready.”
NT: Where is this new video filmed?
IMAY: “The indoor scenes were shot in the room I used to live in at my mom’s house. The outdoor scenes were shot at the Ponce Inlet Preserve.”
NT: Who directed it?
IMAY: “We decided early on that we wanted to work with a transgender director for this video due to the subject matter. Our wonderful friend Michael-Rex had recently come out as transgender and really inspired me to finally out myself as a woman, so who better to help me tell that story than her?”
NT: I can draw a lot of comparisons to your band. What music videos influenced you growing up?
IMAY: “I’m really picky about music videos in a sense. It’s not that they have to be pristine for me to enjoy them, but I really have to love them to ever give them a second viewing. Videos I love this way include “Connector” by A Lot Like Birds and all the animated music videos from John Howe, “Salt” by Bad Suns has a really sick music video, and all of us are all huge fans of our director Michael-Rex and all of the videos she has worked on.”
NT: What’s the narrative in this video?
IMAY: “The song is really about how I came to terms with being a transgender woman and the experience that lead me to face that. We took the idea of a creepy pasta called The Three Kings Ritual and used it as a metaphor for the death and rebirth of my ego.”
NT: Where did you get those masks?!
IMAY: ” The masks turned out wonderfully. We shipped them to the shoot location and didn’t get to see them until the day of production. We were so scared they would arrive damaged or something would go wrong. We ordered them from Christian Lazcano on Etsy. You can view his store by clicking here!”
NT: How has the response been to the new material?
IMAY: “The response has been unreal. We’re so thankful to everyone that has shared, bought, or streamed “All Magic Users Swim in the Loomy Gloom”. We’re very excited to share “Blue-Eyes White Yeti” along with this music video and get feedback from our wonderful fans.”
