We got to know New Jersey’s Deeply Woven earlier this year when they released their debut EP. Now we take a look at the albums that inspired them both as a band and individually:
(Band)
Tesseract- Altered State – “As a band, we strive to integrate complexity and technicality alongside ambience and dynamics. Tesseract taught us how to blend and maintain that balance, and Altered State was a prime example. Besides the layered poly metric riffs and the glassy clean chords, the multi-layered vocal harmonies and lyrics of Ashe O’Hara complete their instrumental sound and just makes the album a full-on sonic journey! We’re glad to all be on the same understanding about the brilliance of Altered State and can’t wait to implement more of it’s style into our music.”
Animals As Leaders- The Joy of Motion – “Animals As Leaders has always been that one band to us where we’ll have no idea what they’ll do next, but can guarantee that our minds will be pleasantly blown. Once The Joy of Motion dropped, I don’t think we listened to anything else but that album for a good while! Every song stands strong on its own and has had a great amount of repeat value. “Lippincott” is a band favorite! Another thing that stood out greatly was the organic production, thanks to their engineer, Nolly Getgood (former bassist of Periphery). It’s probably one of the most sonically natural and balanced album we’ve listened to. Hoping to hear another AAL album produced by Nolly!”

The Contortionist- Language – “Whenever the weather resembles late summer, I get a subconscious urge to put this album on. The memories attached to this record are intense, and the emotions within the songs are strong. I really love the ethereal, cerebral and otherworldly vibes, as well as the variety of sounds and ambient textures, not to mention the amazing instrumentation. This is the album that showed me that music can be heavy without being dissonant and distorted.”
Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream – “This is the first album and band that created an obsession within me. It fulfilled everything I thought a band should sound like. It’s melodic, psychedelic, heavily layered and has awesome riffs, all while grooving super hard. The emotional complexity is very apparent with this record, which is something I always loved. You can focus in on sections of the music and feel happy one moment, and gloomy the next.”

Tigran Hamasyan- Shadow Theater – “Based off of Tosin Abasi’s (Animals As Leaders) recommendation, I started listening to Tigran Hamasyan, beginning with his album, Mockroot. I instantly grew attached to the chaotic yet organized composition and needed more. I took a step back from his discography and delved into Shadow Theater. It’s one of those albums you can’t put down. There’s so much to take out of each song, whether it’s emotional or musically technical. My favorite tracks would have to be the two-part epics, “Pt1 Collapse” & “Part2 Alternative Universe”. Rarely do I get to call something a masterpiece, and Shadow Theater is just that.”
Native Construct- Quiet World – “This album perfectly executes the constant push and pull of genres I like all in one collective. It’s all over the place in the best way possible. It’s a testament to the experimental genre of music and how relevant it can still be, despite the zany song structures. I can honestly say that in the short span of time I spent listening to Quiet World, it drastically influenced and inspired a good amount of the newer Deeply Woven songs!”

Between The Buried And Me- The Parallax II: Future Sequence – “I always enjoy putting The Parallax II on during long drives because it accompanies the experience of traveling on the road perfectly. I feel as though this album itself travels in a musical and conceptual sense. I really love how BTBAM incorporates so many styles of music outside of metal into their songwriting. When they transition into the soft and clean parts they’re so much more impactful because of the heavy and dark riffs that built up to those moments.”
Frank Zappa- Joe’s Garage (Acts I, II & III) – “If there was a single album I can attribute to opening my eyes and ears to the potential of musical creativity, it would be Joe’s Garage by Frank Zappa. This album taught me that music can have genuine comedic value when executed in a well-planned manner, especially when tied into the concept of an album. I love how the story of Joe’s Garage illustrates life as a young aspiring musician experiencing the motions of life. All the while Frank incorporates themes about different aspects of society such as religion, government and commercialism. I really respect that he was an individual who was very certain of what he wanted to execute in music.”

TTNG- Animals – “This album was my first introduction to “math rock” featuring clean guitars with tapping technique, odd time signatures, and catchy yet melancholic singing and lyrics. Even after many listens it still retains a freshness and emotional rawness. One of my favorite parts of this album is Chris Collis’ drums, which make the virtuosic guitar parts groove nicely. This is one album I’ll always sing along to.”
Return to Forever- Where Have I Known You Before – “A jazz fusion record from 1972, this album stands out because of how incredible the performances of each band member are individually and playing together. Chick Corea’s Rhodes piano and synthesizers provide dense harmonies and swirling melodies to an energetic, funky jazz rock rhythm section. Lenny White’s drumming can go from soft and minimal to bombastic and richly textured. There is always more to unpack from this album in every listen.”
