MY 10 FAVORITE CONCERTS: When I Say Jump

Far too often in the music industry I see artists trying to bring each other down. It’s my belief that the more we build each other up and discuss our influences and the music and experiences that have changed us, the more we will connect.
If you’ve ever been to a live show of any kind you know that a band’s performance can force catharsis and leave a lasting impression.
I’m happy to have South Carolina punk/post-hardcore act When I Say Jump give us the first installment of a new spin off series where musicians will take a look at the best live shows they’ve ever seen.

Lucas Daprile, Guitar

Placeholder
“I’m pretty sure I threw out my neck out headbanging and singing along to “Building Six.” Placeholder was able to make riffs that thumped like a howitzer while also being more fun than a drunken bounce-a-round. Though, they’re more than just a good show. The band members and the fans were extremely supportive. Now that I think about it, that head banging might have started a half hour earlier with Jail Socks.”

Jail Socks
“I love how Jail Socks punches out their most powerful lyrics in a song. It’s done in a sincere way that genuinely connected with the audience. Their cheery, yet sincere cocktail of energy and youth gives me some serious The Story So Far vibes. I’d be happy to play a show with them any day.”

Jarrod Atkins, Bass

Slipknot
“Slipknot has always held a special place in my heart. They were one of the first “heavy” bands I ever listened to so seeing them live was insane. I’ve seen them twice and both times were amazing. I think they influence my live performance because I always want to see more than just four or five dudes standing there playing their instruments.”

Watergate (and by extension Unsettled)

“When we were approached by our fellow local bands to do a Watergate vs. Unsettled “Grudge Match”, I was admittedly a little skeptical at first, but in the end I was happy we agreed to do the show. After we opened for them, we cleared the stage for the insanity that was about to unfold. Both bands set up with the drum sets facing each other and had it out on stage. Each band launched into their best material back and forth like a tennis match, and the competition made each of them even better.”

Jordan Atkins, Drums

Lamb of God

“A few years ago, I went with my brothers and a few coworkers to a show in Georgia where Motionless in White was opening for Lamb of God, Slipknot and Bullet For My Valentine. Anyway the thing that really stood out to me was how consistent Chris Adler is behind the drums. Every note is crisp and clean, no matter the tempo.”

Enterprise Earth

“I came into this show not knowing who they were, but I when I left I knew I’d never forget them. They were a huge presence on stage, demanding everyone’s attention and controlling the crowd with their music. It almost felt like a battlefield in the pit, but I managed to make it out before it got too hairy (I know my limit quite well).”

Angels Among Ashes

“These are some guys that have really tasty riffs and some pretty crazy vocals. I haven’t seen them live and in person since their line up changed; I definitely need to fix that, but I’ve seen every video and they rip. I’m friends with most of the band so I know that they deliver live. They’re all really cool, open minded guys and very supportive of anyone they come across.”

John Davis, Vocals

Never I

“Jarrod may have stolen my pick for Unsettled/Watergate, but that freed me up to gush about Never I. Ho. Ly. Shit. I’m too young and sheltered to have seen old school Underoath, but because of them I’m not kicking myself. The amount of passion each and every member brings to a show is unbridled, almost unsettling.”

Withdraw

“I can never see Withdraw enough. Most of the live shows I’ve gone to are smaller local gigs, and the best of those often involve Withdraw. The guest vocalists they bring up never disappoint, everyone piles up to shout at Will, they attract friendly people. I can bank on them to provide a good time.”

Of Mice & Men

“So if I’m being honest I never really liked these guys, but when I saw them at Warped Tour a few years ago something just kind of took over. I got way more into their show than anyone I had gone to see. Maybe it was the heat, maybe the studio doesn’t do them justice, or maybe they hire hypnotists to work the crowd, but regardless I was jumping up and down trying to get the rest of the crowd pumped up.”
