Synthetic Ghosts is a New Orleans based two-piece rock band that offers a cutting-edge take on modern indie
music. The group originally formed as a college experiment that leaned toward stripped down garage rock. However, their music quickly evolved into a more nuanced sound consisting of distorted guitars inter-twined with layers of analog synths, drum machines, and obscure cartoon samples.
These are the albums that influenced them most:
Andre:
The White Stripes- White Blood Cells
“I attribute my willingness to start writing music to this record. I mean if I could take people on a similar emotional ride that this album took me, then I would know I succeeded as a musician. It’s worth mentioning that The White Stripes only accomplished this by using a guitar, drums and vocals. If you want to hear something really honest and raw, look no further.”
The Beatles- Revolver
“Take a look at the opening track, “Taxman” and then take a look at the closing track, “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and then realize that they were written by the same band 6 decades ago. Maybe start crying, because it’s virtually impossible to top that level of lyrical and musical diversity. I mean The Beatles really managed to set the gold standard for bands to come.”
Sublime- 40oz To Freedom
“I’m not a big stoner, but if anyone ever finds a better record to smoke weed to, please give me a call, I’ll buy all the “supplies” and hopefully I’ll get my head blown away in return. Also “Waiting For My Ruca” is a perfect song. It would be my dream come true to write something so impactful with so little going on, truly an amazing tune.”
The Last Shadow Puppets- The Age of The Understatement
“What a beautiful album! If you’re an adolescent whose biggest disappointment so far has been getting rejected by a girl than this is a record just for you. The melancholic mood of this album with rare moments of optimism will get straight through you. Think of your favorite romantic movie. This is it, but in audible form.”
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
“I’m not sure what to even say about Paranoid. I’ve never met a person who wouldn’t like it, regardless of their age or musical preference and the craziest part it’s technically a metal album. Black Sabbath managed to create an absolute classic. I mean that’s how you know you have a great album, when everyone can get behind it.”
Ben:
TV on the Radio- Dear Science
“The album that made me fall in love with indie music. It opened my eyes to all the sonic and structural creativity that indie music has to offer. The songs are jam packed with sonic detail and creative instrumentation. The album creates massive walls of sound by mixing minimalistic 80’s-esque funk guitar lines, various synths and samples, layered string and horn arrangements, along with both programmed and acoustic drums. TVOTR also has the advantage of having two equally talented singers, whose voices compliment each other and add extra depth to the record. It is produced by one of the band’s members, an indie super-producer David Andrew Sitek. You can tell how much autonomy the band has over the record. This is indie music at its most creative and engaging.”

The Rolling Stones- Exile on Main St.
“The Rolling Stone’s 10th album, released at the end of their peak years in 1972, is their most holistic work in their extensive catalog. The album seamlessly blends together multiple genres: blues, swing, rock, gospel, and even folk/country. The timeless duo of Richards and Jagger, along with guitar virtuoso Mick Taylor, and producer Jimmy Miller, created a perfectly fluid 18 track double-album without a bad cut. It might be the best “rock n roll” album ever recorded.”
Rage Against the Machine- Rage Against the Machine
“Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled debut album is 52 minutes of pure adrenaline pumping funk metal/rap rock. The album marries De la Rocha’s revolutionary/anti-authoritarian lyrics, reminiscent of Public Enemy, with a combination of kinetic, grooving funk bass lines and bone crunching heavy metal riffs. Throw in Tom Morello, the “DJ of Rage,” and you have a truly authentic, passionate, and original piece of art.”
Jimi Hendrix- Axis: Bold as Love
“An instant classic. It’s always tough to pick a favorite Hendrix album because of some of the cuts on Hendrix’s other classic, Electric Ladyland, which features “Voodoo Child” and his breath-taking rendition of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” However, Axis always sticks out to me. Not only does it feature Jimi’s guitar virtuosity, it contains some of the 60’s best songwriting, with tracks like “Little Wing” and “Castles Made of Sand.” Much like The Beatles, who pushed the limits of studio experimentation with Rubber Soul and Revolver, Hendrix further helped to help push this experimentation, by fleshing out new techniques such as back-masking and making abundant use of echo and flanging.”
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magic
“This album, along with a handful of others, made me want to pick up a guitar and give it a try. Something about John Frusciante, and his playing style struck a chord with me. His melodies and riffs connected with me instantly and drew me in as a listener. While it may not even be the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s best album in terms of songwriting, let alone any kind of special gem in the vast catalog of recorded music, it will always be one of my personal favorites because of the raw energy the album contains and the personal inspiration it had on me as a musician. It’s tough not to love vintage Chad Smith, Flea, and Frusciante just jamming out for 70 mins.”
