MY 10 FAVORITE ALBUMS: Andres Aparicio (Andrés)

Andres Aparicio has quite a varied taste in music. That much shows through the music of his brainchild, Andrés (formerly known as Terra Alive). Featuring Jazzy guitar parts and instrumentals reminiscent of Dance Gavin Dance and Chon as well as vocals that wouldn’t be at all out of place on a top 40 song, Andres brings everything he has. With four releases under his belt and the fifth – Strange Memories On This Nervous Night –  being released April 7th he’s had plenty of time to hone his craft. Andres was kind enough to share a list of his top 10 favorite albums, so if you want to know the influences behind this amazing musician’s music, look no further. Enjoy!

Drake – Nothing Was The Same
“I wish I could put Drake’s whole discography as my favorite album, but I have a feeling that’s not what this list is about… Drake is my fav artist ever and if I had to pick an album that means the most to me, it’ll be this album. I can relate to so many things he’s said throughout the years, but for some reason this album hits me the hardest and entertains me the most, as I feel he embodies human emotion and interactions extremely well. Probably lyrics like, “Girl don’t treat me like a stranger, girl you know I seen you naked”, “You don’t even know what you want from love anymore, I’m searching for something I’m missing and disappear when I’m bored, But girl what qualities was I looking for before, who you settling for, who better for you than the boy huh?” and “These are usually just some thoughts,That I would share with myself, But I thought “Fuck it”, it’s worth it to share ’em, With someone else other than Paris for once, I text her from time to time, she a mom now, I guess sometimes life forces us to calm down, I told her she could live with me if she need to, I got a compound but I think she’s straight” are the reason why I love this album so much.”

Dance Gavin Dance – Self Titled
“I also wish I could put dgd’s whole discography as 1, cuz they’re my favorite band ever, but If I’m gunna pick one it’s their self-titled. DGD’s music is the most innovative, energetic, charismatic I’ve ever heard, but this album in particular has the lyrics and vocal performance on this album just resonates with me. Lyrics like, “I hid in the bushes I’m tripping on thiz”, “My Parents can pay for the abortion you know”, and “to think this whole time, we’re provoking each other in blinding violence” grab all my attention and devotion to this album. Songs like “Alex English”, “Uneasy Hearts Weigh the Most”, and “People You Know” are enough for me to say this is one of my all time favorite albums. They combine really smart progressive post-hardcore music with really honest genuine lyrics about phases they are going through in their life and I absolutely love it.”

My Chemical Romance – Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
“This Album is the reason why I even picked up a guitar or wanted to perform in the first place. The first time I ever saw the I’m not okay music video, everything was done for me and I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I owe a lot of my endeavors to My Chem, and this album. The diversity on this album, from being aggressive, to soft and sweet, is absolutely captivating. I hear Genuine Human emotion on this album and it’s what I’ve always looked for in music.”

Blink-182 – Self Titled
“Man this album never gets old, I’ve been listening to this album non-stop since I was in 5th grade and I’m 23 now so that’s saying something…. This album has so much character and emotion and charisma it’ll never stop being played. “Obvious”, “Asthenia”, and “Down” are some of my all time favorite songs. They were so ambitious on this album I will always love it”

Fall Out Boy – From Under the Cork Tree
“This is one of the most genius albums I’ve ever listened to lyrically. I’ve also been listening to this album since 5th grade. I still hear lyrics to this day where I’m like, “got damn no one will ever write as genius lyrics as this album.” Obviously the songs are super fun and catchy which is why everyone should love fall out boy, but GOT DAMN THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING.I’m still tryna figure out if “Keep Quiet, nothing comes as easy as you” is a romantic thing to say or a mean thing to say? Later on in that song (nobody puts baby in the corner) he says, “So wear my locket around your throat, I’ll weigh you down I’ll watch you choke you look so good in blue”, and you get this vibe that he doesn’t necessarily like this girl.. haha. I could honestly rave about the lyrics from this album for ten pages, so I’m just gunna put an end to this raving right here for your sake… haha LOVE THIS ALBUM!”

From First To Last – Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Body Count
“This was the first heavy album with a little bit of screaming that I was like, “fuck yeah I think I’m down for this whole post-hardcore screamo thing” Not only are the songs really fun and quirky on this album, but the lyrics are wildly entertaining! sonny’s performance on this album was enough to move me and get me through any suburban pre-teen “troubles” I was dealing with. The fact that the hidden track was so aggressive and post-hardcore-ey with lyrics like, “I might be your baby’s Daddy, but that don’t mean shit!” and a rap verse is enough for me to say no one makes music like this anymore.”

Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
“If this was the first album I ever heard, I’d pick this as my number one favorite album. In my opinion this album is the best album ever made. The instrumentals are out of this world talented, as well as appealing and fun. The lyrics and vocal performance are out of this world. Frank Ocean embodies the human spirit completely on this album. I’ve listened to this album a billion times since it came out. In fact, I remember the night this album dropped surprisingly on itunes, I was drunk as fuck after a night of boxed wine drinking at the park with my friends, and I came home and saw on the internet that frank released the album, I created an itunes account in that very moment just to download it and to this very day I still don’t remember the password or log in information to that account, but I just had to get the album cuz I knew it was gunna mean a lot to me. I listen to this album non-stop always.”

Taking Back Sunday – Where You Want to Be
“Taking Back Sunday is one of my fav bands of all time, and if I’m gunna pick an album it’s this one. Mianly cuz “Decade Under the Influence” is my all time favorite song of all time. Again have been listening since 5th grade. the songs on this album are just amazing. the intros and guitar licks are perfect. I Just love this album plain and simple.”

OutKast – Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
“Yo this album honestly inspired me so hard. I listened to this album non-stop through out high school. the second track Love Hater starts off with a mars volta-esque guitar and drum part, and then jumps into a jazzy swing part with andre-300 saying shit like, “Everybody needs a glass of water today, to chase the hate away” and not to mention jazz guitar through out this song. I fucking adore this album with all my heart. In my opinion Andre is the best rapper ever. He is so innovative with his flow, and he sings great and writes songs that just bring so much life into my world. “She Lives in my lap”, “Spread”, “Take off your cool” and the last song will always be very impressionable songs to me.”

The Matches – Decomposer
“This album is so fucking underrated and for some reason none of my friends have ever heard this album but this is for real one of the greatest albums ever made. Lyrics, Music, Charisma, Instrumentals, ALL ON SOME COLORFUL SHIT. I genuinely love every song on this album. “I got a lead on the job, From a cousin in Silverlake, So don’t just stand there and shrug, Didi, I’m turning the door knob”. Honestly this one of those albums that I can’t explain to you why it’s amazing, I just want you to go and listen to it. If you like to smile and you like to put some color in your life go listen to this album. HARD”
