Interview with Thieves

Born out of Austin, TX. Thieves are an aggressive pop punk band revered for their vigorous live shows and reflective lyrics.  Delivering powerful guitar riffs paralleled by atmospheric leads. Their sound challenges and aims to advance the pop punk genre.  The band formed back in January of 2009. The four-piece band is comprised of Billy Canino- vocals/guitar, Chris Skiles- guitar/vocals, Nathan Helton- bass/vocals, and Judson on the drums.

Since forming in 2009, the band have definitely made a name for themselves to say the very least.  They played locally for years with a four-song demo to develop their sound.  In 2011 they released their first LP titled Just Give It Up.  The band quickly became known for their impressively vigorous stage presence and energetic shows.  It was then in 2012, they released their first EP titled Achiever.  The EP was highly successful and captured their audience with its musical complexity and instrumental makeup.  They spent the next few years building up their fan base, they won Ernie’s Battle of the Bands competition in 2012, played at Vans Warped tour, landed a spot on the Team Pagano Compilation in 2013 and much more.  It was then in 2014, they released their second EP, Colorchange, produced by Bea Burchell.

Thieves teamed up with Revival Recordings to release their first LP since 2011, titled No Motive; recorded by renowned producer Sam Pura released on November 25th, 2016.

This band has a work ethic that is highly respectable and inspiring.  They are taking the pop punk scene by storm and creating something amazing.

I had the pleasure to interview Nathan about the band and what’s in store for the future of Thieves!

Kaitlin: “What’s your favorite thing about being in Thieves?”

Nathan: “Wrecking harder than any band we share the stage with.”

Kaitlin: “What are you working on right now?”

Nathan: “Figuring out where we went wrong and how to get people to start liking our band.  We just put out a full-length called “No Motive” in November, so we’re doing our best to promote that.  It has been a while since we had released anything prior, so trying to get the record in as many hands as possible.”

Kaitlin: “Musically, who are some of your biggest inspirations?”

Nathan: “As far as in our “scene” we really like Thrice, Every Time I Die, Circa Survive, and The Swellers.  For acts more outside of our genre, we really enjoy Freddie Gibbs, Brad Paisley, CHVRCHES, and Moving Parts.”

Kaitlin: “What is something that you enjoy doing outside of music, that contributes to your musicality?  Possibly a hobby that you turn to in order to rejuvenate your creativity?”

Nathan: “I’m a big fan of comedy, stand-up and podcasts and stuff.  I’m really into Patrice O’Neal, Jim Norton, Louis CK, and a big fan of the Joe Rogan Experience.  Besides comedy, I also really enjoy working two full-time jobs and slaving my life away to the man in order to pay for this band.”

Kaitlin: “What’s your song writing process?”

Nathan: “Typically one of us has a simple riff or progression, and when we all get in a room together, we elaborate and put the actual songs together.  There’s a couple songs that come up on the spot at a practice, and we just get in the jam mode and pound out the entire thing as a group.  But, mostly it starts with a single part being brought to the table for the whole band to complete.”

Kaitlin: “What’s your favorite song you’ve ever written?”

Nathan: “Personally, a song called Achiever, off one of our old EP’s.”

Kaitlin: “Since being in a band, what is one of the most important/hardest things you’ve learned?

Nathan: “No one, absolutely no one will ever help you.  It doesn’t matter how good your music is, if you don’t have the “look”, no one is going to give a shit about you.”

Kaitlin: “I know you guys are currently on tour, what has been your favorite moment/experience?”

Nathan: “The best part of this tour so far is hanging out with some of our real close friends in northern Alabama.  We had a couple of days off so we really got to just hang out and chill with them instead of having to worry about load-in and stuff like that.”

Kaitlin: “What can we look forward to in the future from Thieves?”

Nathan: “Hopefully some more music, and hopefully some more gigs.  We’ll see.”
