The first look at the new suits of the Power Rangers was revealed through Entertainment Weekly. Last month, we had our first look at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. The suits are modernized in that they have a battle armor appearance. Other than being transformed into rather thin spandex, the suits are sleek and look durable. Already people have commented that the armor thing is nothing like the Power Rangers we know and love.

Funny enough, the suits in the picture above are from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie back in 1995. Granted these armor modifications are subtle, both additions of armor make sense. Let’s think, would you feel safer knowing a knight in shining armor was defending you or someone wearing a motorcycle helmet in spandex? It’s more believable that our defenders would arm themselves to the teeth.
Yes, I realize I just said believable when discussing Power Rangers but suspension of disbelief. Time to discuss more about the power surging through the suits! EW talked to the movie’s production designers Andrew Menzies about the suits and said, “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them.” I guess in relation to Zordon and the morphing grid, instead of a magical presence, it’ll be more alien or biological. Though Power Coins seem to still be there, I’m not expecting Ninjor to appear.
Speaking of Power Coins, I love that they are in the suits and you can see the actual energy produced. Being able to see the energy makes it easier to believe that these normal kids become strong enough to fight monsters. Imagine seeing the energy depleting in the final battle like a burning candle, only to be reignited with the final push to defeat the villain. I also enjoy that the morpher isn’t dangling off of a belt, which always confused me as a kid. I don’t recall if it happened, but if a sword were to cut it, would the Rangers lose their transformation?
There are a few nitpicks I have with the new suits though. First off, the picture makes it look as if the Blue and Black suits are only the one color. The Red Ranger obviously has his color plus white like Mighty Morphin, Pink and Yellow seem like they have white as well. The point of the suits resembling each other is to have a uniformed team. I don’t know, it just make Blue and Black look like oddballs.
Lastly enough are the heels, I don’t care about the breastplate for the females. Maybe it’s more comfortable to fight in for the females. Director Dean Israelite even told EW: “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.” Aesthetics are fine and all but those heels don’t look like you’d be nimble on your feet. The heels make it seems like Pink and Yellow are going to lose their footing in a fight.
Who knows if these are the final touches to the costumes? I guess we’ll find out when Power Rangers releases on March 24, 2017.
