STAY WOKE: 10 Sleeper Hits Vol. 1

Welcome to Stay Woke, a collection of the dopest songs of the past month you may not have heard. As we jump into April, it’s only right that we at TC give you some of the hottest songs you may have missed in March.

  1. Madeintyo – Chocolate ShakeMADEINTYO

Madeintyo is definitely on the come up. Appearing last year with the wild hit Uber Everywhere, the Atlanta via Tokyo rapper and the Privateclub Records crew continue to pump out simple yet affective turn up music. Tyo already has a relatively stacked discography, including his own You Are Forgiven EP as well as a collab EP with fellow Privateclub artist Royce Rizzy and Canada based producer Murdabeatz, MADEINMURDA. With a collab ep with Metro Boomin, MADEINBOOMIN, on the way, Tokyo will surely be breaking over soon. You can check out more of MADEINTYO here.

2. Jaalid – Slopes18024-thumb-430x270

Boston MC/Crooner Jaalid has created quite the buzz for himself, even with only 2 songs out. Appearing last December with the groovy banger Paradox, he pops back up in with the heavily dance influenced Slopes. Dance in hip-hop has steadily been on the rise, thanks to artists like Goldlink and Amine, and Jaalid’s track is an example of how solid it can be. It’s safe to say Jaalid’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

3. Lil Yachty – Up Next 2 ft. BIGBRUTHACHUBBA & Byou

Newcomer and viral enigma Lil Yachty dropped his debut project, Lil Boat, last month, showcasing his energy and the unique style he brings the game. The tape as a whole is solid, but Up Next 2 greatly stands out, with Yachty proving he’s not just the typical viral kid, but that he can actually rhyme extremely well. Lines like “She gon suck my dick cuz she like how I’m rhyming” pepper his seemingly never ending flow, making smile and hyping you up. Signed to the Quality Control, the same label as Atlanta hard hitters Migos and Rich The Kid, Yachty has already taken multiple steps in the right direction. You can download Lil Boat here.

3. Aminé – Caroline

Portland, Oregon MC Aminé is easily one of the most underlooked artists out right now. Dropping his exceptional Calling Brio mixtape last August, Aminé showcases a strong flow and a smooth singing voice, coupled with production combining the worlds of House and Hip-Hop. Bringing a new unique sound to game, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets the recognition he deserves. This new track Caroline caught me surprise, a hard hitting sex tinged love song for a new generation. Expect to hear more from him real real soon.

5. Tunji Ige x ILoveMakonnen – Don’t Do Too Much

I’ve been a fan of Tunji Ige ever since I heard the ever infectious Day2Day back in 2014, and ever since he’s sought out to prove that it was just the beginning, dropping the highly underrated The Love Project a couple years back to high acclaim. This collaboration between him and Atlanta rapper ILoveMakonnen is the product of pure chemistry, and shows the artist is on a wave that just won’t slow down. He just released his follow up project, Missed Calls, a few days ago, and it is definitely worth a listen.

6. Kaiydo – Reflections

A wavy 19 year old from Orlando is popping up out of nowhere with some serious talent. Reflections is the first track I’ve heard from Kaiydo, and if that’s what he has to deliver, he’ll truly go places. From the light, airy synths on the track to his quirky lyricism and voice, he’s full of pure artist energy. This track has the potential to skyrocket the kid wherever he wants to go.

7. 24hrs – Back For Me

It’s something about 24hrs style that peaks my curiousity. Maybe it’s his lofi autotuned sound or his mysterious social media presence, but there’s something intriguing about him as an artist. First turned on to him by random soundcloud searching, it’s his different yet familiar Atlanta-esque style that keeps me listening. He has a few tracks on his soundcloud, with his Open EP on the way.

8. Wave Chapelle ft. Lil Uzi Vert – Boss Up

Wave Chapelle is probably the best rap name I’ve heard in while. Not only that, but he’s the first rapper I’ve heard of from Wisconsin. While Milwaukee may not be a place known for breeding the hottest artists, they’ve got at least one in Wave. His strong voice, dope lyricism, and ear for great production give him the potential to catch the attention of many, and having a solid feature like Lil Uzi on a track only adds fuel to the fire.

9. Ugly God – Water

Sometimes a song comes along that you just want to dance to while simultaneously laughing extremely hard. This is that song. Ugly God‘s trap comedy style of rapping is something that the game needs, to show it’s not all about serious competition and being the best MC, sometimes you just wanna make yourself or someone else laugh. Songs like Booty From A Distance and Bernie Sanders are perfect for when you’re in the mood for a smile.

10. Denzel Curry – Knotty Head

EASILY the best rapper and track on this list. Denzel Curry hit the rap game upside the head when he released this song. His quick, monotonic, delivery and lyricism place him next up for stardom. When his set was cut short at SXSW a couple weeks ago, he went into the streets and ripped one of the craziest freestyles of the past couple of years. He’s one of the hungriest out right now, and releasing his Imperial project last month has set him up to go even farther.
